REALITY
CHECK
Credit Where Credit Is Due!
Every staff member in an association or non-profit has had it happen at least once in their career (and likely much more often)…they achieve an excellent result on a program, service, or operational area, only to have volunteers receive the credit.
Generally, association and non-profit staff have lower compensation than the private sector or government. Their benefit packages are also usually inferior. Resources for training and development are also typically lacking.
Then, to give further motivation for staying in the job, they credit volunteers with staff accomplishments!
Now there is a trend to hold staff more accountable for accomplishments, but we see no corresponding trend to credit staff with those accomplishments.
We see numerous examples of awards programs and recognition programs for employees in the private sector and government, but the majority of association and non-profit recognition programs are focused on volunteers.
While volunteers are important, associations and non-profits must begin to credit staff where credit is due.
It’s time for a reality check!
Sometimes association and non-profit
staff, volunteers and other stakeholders lose touch with
the bigger picture because they are so caught up in what
is happening in the trenches. Our intent in offering the
Reality Check feature is to get these individuals
to step back and re-think their existing views.
