Reducing Your Organization's EI Premiums

Under the Employment Insurance (EI) Act and the EI Regulations, an employer's EI premiums may be reduced when employees are covered by a qualified short-term disability plan which reduces EI benefits that would be payable if such a plan did not exist. Details

Watch For Fake Associations

The Competition Bureau issued a warning recently for professionals and businesses to be wary of mailings that appear to be from well-known associations requesting payment for membership. These mailings, in the form of a bill or invoice, use names similar to existing associations of which the recipients may already be members. Some of the mailings use names such as: Veterinary Association of Canada, Dental Association of Canada, Pharmacists Association of Canada, and the Convenience Store Association of Canada. Details

CCRA Targeting Non-Profit Junior Hockey Teams

The Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency is auditing teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). Published remarks from Prince Albert MP Brian Fitzpatrick provide the details: “All teams in the SJHL are non-profit. All of the teams are operating in the red. Not one team could operate without the tremendous amount of volunteer labour and contributions from the community that sponsors the team. Not one player in the SJHL is paid a salary. Players receive a small amount of spending money from the club; most spending money still comes from the players’ parents. The players are billeted out to homes in the city or town that is home to the team. These billets are paid $250 a month to provide meals and accommodation to the player.”

It appears that CCRA has targeted the money paid to billet the players as income for the players. Questions have been raised in the House by the Canadian Alliance as to whether the government is also going to target billet money paid to house Olympic athletes. The government had no response.

The audits were triggered when a former player in the SJHL applied for EI benefits after leaving the league.
