Paying for Web Links!
One of the most
ridiculous practices in associations today is asking
members to pay for web links in on-line membership
listings. While associations may be somewhat
justified in charging for enhanced features, such as an
expanded listing, the practice of charging for web links
can leave a bad taste in members' mouths.
Did you charge
for fax numbers in listings when the fax came out?
Likely you didn't include them until there was a level of
saturation, and then all members who had a fax number
could automatically include it in their listing. And
things probably unfolded similarly for e-mail addresses.
Don't get
distracted by the $$$$. The inclusion of the web link is a
low cost method for improving value to members.
After all, print directory listings are of decreasing
value. Web directories can replace that value
assuming that the vehicle incorporates a key feature...the
ability to access the member's site with a click.
The value of the
on-line directory to those accessing the site is
diminished by the absence of web links for the majority of
members. If people quit using the on-line
directories, that will further deteriorate the value of
individual listings.
Liven up your
members' on-line listings with a link to their site!
For everyone...with no additional fees or charges.
