TECHNOLOGY TIPS
Hyperlinks
The inclusion of links in websites, e-mails and other electronic documents is helpful to readers.
However, it is frustrating for users when they click on links, and the resulting web page is downloaded into an existing browser window (instead of opening a new browser window).
For example, consider the reaction of the visitor when your link downloads a page replacing:
-
an almost completed on-line form or survey;
-
the audio being listened to or the video being viewed in the browser window;
-
a web page accessed via a lengthy and extensive search process; or
-
a confirmation page that has yet to be printed;
The list is endless, but the frustration is the same when the clicked hyperlink replaces the web page.
The preferred approach is to have hyperlinks open in new browser windows.
The exception is when a link in one of your own pages opens another of your pages. In this instance, a new browser window is not necessary.
