REALITY
CHECK
Charity=Good
"We are a registered charity, therefore we, and the work we do, are good."
That view reminds me of a logics class I took in university many years ago. The focus of the class was to learn to think logically, and to examine illogical statements and arguments being made in the media, the political arena, and elsewhere.
The above charity=good statement is illogical because it assumes that charitable organizations and the work they do are good because they are charities. Instead, the charitable status should enable organizations to be good and do good works. Because they do good work, they deserve to be registered charities.
Unfortunately, some registered charities and their leadership have fallen for the illogical view. Any thing they do is good because they are charities...the end justifies the means.
That is wrong, and these leaders need a reality check. Their charitable status comes with responsibilities, and no ends, regardless of how noble, justify any means.
Sometimes
association and non-profit staff, volunteers and other
stakeholders lose touch with the bigger picture because
they are so caught up in what is happening in the
trenches. Our intent in offering the Reality Check
feature is to get these individuals to step back and
re-think their existing views.
