Distinctive Ring
Various
hardware and software solutions exist to differentiate
between the distinctive ring feature that is available
from the local phone company. For those who are
not familiar with the service, a second telephone number
can be added to an existing line utilizing a different
ring tone.
Typically,
for example, the second telephone number with the
distinctive ring feature is used as a fax number.
However,
have you noticed that your members who have this service
may not be able to receive faxes from your organization?
Perhaps
this is the problem - if the individual also has call
waiting, the local phone company applies a different
ring tone to notify them that the waiting call is long
distance. However, this means that the hardware or
software solution set up to divert the second number to
a fax or other destination will not work because the
tone for long distance calls is not recognized. This
long distance alert feature can be disabled by
contacting the local telephone company.
Members
may be annoyed when a night-time fax call from the
association rings on the house phones awakening the
household rather than diverting peacefully to the fax
machine or computer. But, in this case, it is not the
association's fault!

significant role in the work of association staff. The Technology
Tips focus on how individuals can manage using
technology rather than being managed by
technology.
