Sample Leave
Without Pay
Policy
Leave without pay may be requested by an
eligible staff member who wishes to take time off from
work duties for extraordinary personal reasons for no
period greater than three business days because
-
he or she has exhausted accrued sick
leave and accrued vacation leave, and/or
-
he or she is not eligible for family and
medical leave, and/or
-
he or she has exhausted rights to family
leave of absence and medical leave of absence.
It may not be used as an extension of
vacation leave or to create a vacation period. It may not
be used to free the staff member's time in order to attend
to outside employment. It is not a personal leave of
absence.
Whether or not to approve such leave is at
the association's sole discretion. If it is denied, the
employee may resign. Requests should be made to the
appropriate supervisor who should be in consultation with
the Benefits and Payroll Administrator regarding
eligibility.
Leave without pay is not job-protected
leave. The employee will have no greater rights to
employment than if he or she had not taken leave without
pay.
Eligible staff members are full-time and
part-time employees.
Exception. An exception to the
three-day limit may be provided to a new member of the
Association staff who, upon accepting an offer of
employment, notifies Association in writing of personal
commitments made prior to accepting Association employment
offer and requests the time off as leave without pay. The
request will be granted or denied at the discretion of the
hiring manager, in consultation with the CEO.
If the newly hired employee has passed the
initial 90-day period for use of vacation leave benefits,
he or she must be first compensated for the days off using
accrued vacation leave and any available personal day(s).
