You May Be Helping
Spammers
Spammers send out massive amounts of
e-mail to addresses, many of which are out of date or
otherwise invalid. Valid e-mail addresses, once
identified, immediately become more valuable and go
right to the top of the list for more spam. Sometimes
the spam will include instructions on how to opt out,
but following those instructions just verifies that your
address is active. Most of us know not to reply to spam;
we just have to make sure our e-mail clients aren't
responding on our behalf.
However users of Outlook and Outlook
Express (and possibly other e-mail clients) may be
assisting spammers by inadvertently letting them know
their e-mail address is good.
Some e-mail clients automatically send
return receipts to the sender. Return receipts verify that
the message was received.
The options in the software can be changed
so that return receipts are not automatically sent.
