Saskatchewan-based associations and other non-profits collect vast amounts of information about members, prospects, customers, and donors. As a result of federal and other privacy laws, these organizations may have specific responsibilities and accountabilities that must be satisfied with respect to the privacy of the individuals whose information is contained in these databases.

This complimentary briefing session, sponsored by Association Xpertise Inc. and MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman LLP, will address the particular privacy issues faced by associations and non-profits in the context of their activities and constituencies.

The presentation, and supplementary handouts, will provide answers to such questions as:

  • Is my association affected by the law and when?

  • What is personal information?

  • Does it matter how the information is collected or how we plan to use it?

  • How can my association use information I collect from members and others?

  • What must my association do to continue to collect personal information?

  • What are the restrictions related to how we store information?

  • Do individuals have access to the information we have on file for them? Do they have access to everything?

  • Who is responsible for the association complying with the law?

  • Who can lay a complaint under the Act?

  • What action should we take to prepare for the federal and future provincial privacy requirements?

  • What if we have affinity programs that involve external suppliers?

  • Do privacy laws affect information we collected before the laws came into force?

  • Will this affect contracts we enter into, or the insurance we carry?

  • If we have members in other provinces are we also impacted by privacy laws in those provinces?
